Nepal - Organic Sand Filters
The organic sand filters help to ensure that people in several regions of Nepal have a long-term supply of clean drinking water.
On April 25, 2015, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook Nepal and left it in ruins, followed by numerous aftershocks, some of which were also devastatingly strong, until the end of July. Approximately 8,800 people died, over 22,000 were injured, entire villages were wiped out, and supplies collapsed. The already precarious drinking water supply was exacerbated by the earthquake - numerous wells and springs were destroyed.
After the earthquake, employees of our partners, in cooperation with a project manager from Thailand and a local NGO, were trained in the production of organic sand filters to obtain clean drinking water. In the following years, 2,000 filters were produced and distributed to affected families. The project has since been relaunched and the production of more organic sand filters is underway.
Sustainable change in quality of life
Politicians and authorities praise the positive effect of the organic sand filters on the village communities and observe that people are much less ill. An independent test of the organic sand filters found that they are indeed extremely effective. After filtering, the water can be used as drinking water without hesitation, even though it was previously cloudy, high in iron and infested with various bacteria. Many villages do not have spring water - the local population fetches drinking water from the river.
