Only about two-thirds of the children attend elementary school until graduation. Every third child in Madagascar has to work so that the family can survive. The chance of education is thus gone, as is the chance of escape from poverty and misery.

Superstition, ancestor worship and oracles are not unusual in everyday life: On holidays, for example, the bones of the dead are taken from their tombs to attend dances in honor of the gods, along with excessive drinking. The cult of the dead broods over the "Red Island" like a curse.
