Life has always been centred around the Nile, where the majority of the Egyptian population is located. Otherwise, the country is characterised by desert and drought. As the state religion with constitutional status, Islam characterises culture and public life.

With 10% of the population, Christians are one of the strongest minorities in the Middle East. They see themselves as direct followers of the first disciples and look back with pride on their ancestors Moses and Jesus, who lived in the country.

Despite the long Christian tradition in the country, Christians remain a marginalised and often threatened minority, but this does not prevent them from playing a key role for the entire Arab world.
