A Woman Who StaysA Virtual Conversation

MYANMAR
Around 2,000 displaced people live in the Hlegu refugee camp near Yangon. AVC has provided many families with relief supplies and Bibles. And in the process, we met the impressive Miss Twang*.

Miss Twang* is originally from Myanmar herself. Today, she helps the refugees in the camp in Hlegu, about 40 kilometers northeast of Yangon. In recent years, many internally displaced people have found refuge in this region. Due to the coup, 3.5 million people have been forced to flee to date. Unofficial figures even put the number at 6 million—and there is no end in sight.

Miss Twang has personally had to cope with severe personal tragedies: her husband passed away last year. Together, they had regularly visited the camp, encouraging and supporting the people there. Now she is left alone with her three children. But giving up was out of the question for her. On the contrary: in addition to her own children, she has taken in five others who have lost their parents. It is impressive to see the dedication with which she serves her fellow human beings. The growing number of displaced people who are coming to faith through the Good News is a fruit of her daily commitment.

For five years, she has worked tirelessly on behalf of the people in the camp. She organizes the construction of new water wells—and pitches in herself. She helps build simple huts, organizes worship services, and coordinates distribution efforts. AVC recently carried out one such distribution together with a local partner: People received not only rice and toothpaste, but also what matters most in life—God’s Word. Not just through our sharing of His love, but quite concretely in the form of a Bible.
